Metz is a charming provincial city in the Lorraine region located on the east side of the Moselle River, between Nancy and Luxembourg. In 2019 it ranked high in 4th place in the European Best Destinations competition. Famous for its stunning Gothic cathedral and its surprising German Imperial District, the town is also known for being the base for the recently-opened Pompidou Centre. Close to three international borders (Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium), the city is accessible from Paris by TGV in 1.20 hours. Metz is home to the University of Lorraine, a true Garden City, with its trees, flowerbeds and green esplanades gained the nickname “la ville verte” (the green city).
